Picked up from dustydistaff:

  1. Grab the nearest book.
  2. Open the book to page 56.
  3. Find the fifth sentence.
  4. Post the text of that sentence, along with these instructions.

From Algorithms in C (third edition), by Robert Sedgewick: “The cost of an unsuccessful search ending before or after the Nth entry in the table is the same: N.”

So it doesn’t work quite as well with technical books as with literature, but I was too curious to resist.
